At&t and iPhone?

Ok so I want the new iPhone 3g that comes out on July 11th. But I don't have At&t right now. So can I just go on the 11th get a family plan for $69.99 and than add $30 for the data plan (I only want the iPhone on one of my lines) and pay $299 for 16 GB for the iPhone? Or will I have to get one of those speicial iPhone plans? Because on the At&t website it doesn't say anything about adding the data plan for $30. thanks.
