Can I go to the at&t store to buy the iphone 3g and just buy the iphone and not sign up for a contract?

I want the iphone 3g but dont have the money to sign up for a 2 year contract so can I at the at&t store just buy the iPhone 3g without purchasing a contract?
I mean can i walk in to the at&t store and just buy the iphone 3g pay for it than walk out of the store with it? Without signing a contract?
All I want the iPhone for is the ipod part and the internet etc. Not for the phone.

Do I have to sign a contract when I purchase the new 3g iPhone if i dont have service already?
