Deleted Songs On iTunes?

I have deleted song off of iTunes but they are still on my iPod even after I've plugged it in a few times. How do I get the songs I don't want on my iPod off? They didn't go to the recycling bin they just got deleted. But when I use my iPod they're still there. Please help. Its annoying the crap out of me!
