a couple guys i work with have psp's that can rip games, and play downloaded ones. i tried googling how to do this but i dont understand any of the stuff the websites are talking about. can someone put it in lamens terms for me?
how do i mod my psp slim to play downloaded games and such?

You need to first downgrade your psp then upgrade it to custom firmware. In order to do that you need to get your hands on a pandora's battery and magic stick. Since your workmates must have custom firmware psps they must either have a pandora's battery or know someone that does so I'd talk to them about getting your fit with the custom firmware.
