I can't get my Wii Balance Board to sync?

I just purchased a Wii Fit and I can't get the balance board to sync with the console. The batteries appear to be in in correctly and I press sync on the board and then sync on the console and the lights just blink. They never go to a steady blue which is supposed to indicate that they have been synced. Anyone have any trouble shooting tips?
