I'm pretty sure the only way to do this is use iTunes. It's the only thing your iPod can't interact with once plugged into your computer. Then once you use it, your songs are saved to a library (I believe)

Without a third party software it is impossible to transfer music form your ipod to your computer. There are many free third party softwares available thought. I think one is called itrash.

You need third party software to help you copy music from iPod back to comptuer, because iTunes couldn't help you do that. I have been using this iPod transfer to copy my iPod files back to computer for a long time, it works really nice for me. Here is a step by step guide about how to copy songs from iPod to PC
