Installing games in psp?

Im a noob on PSP and wanna buy it….so have lot questions.

1. What is the current firmware on psp?
2. If i want to install non-legal(homebrew) games do i need to downgrade to a different firmware?
3. Should i look for games which works for specific firmware or all psp games would work on it regardless of the firmware.
