The NEW Iphone software?

I have the original iPhone and was wondering if when I download the new software my whole phone and its data including contacts, music, texts, will all be erased? Also I was wondering if the original iPhone owners could get the 3G network? I have the EDGE network so i was wondering if and how you get the 3G network. THANKSS
